Hope she’s hiring! Meet the CEO who introduced ‘no work Wednesday’ – so her lucky employees can work a four-day week

・Staff at Australian tech company have the luxury of only working four-day weeks

・Chief executive Kathryn Blackham wanted to give staff flexibility around hours

・Eliminating Wednesdays gave staff a ‘mini weekend’ and staff were happier

luxury (noun)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” something that you very much enjoy because you do not get it very often という風に記載されています。

Employees at an Australian tech company have the luxury of only working four days a week after their boss decided to shut up shop every Wednesday.

The idea for Melbourne-based app developer Versa Agency to have a shorter work week came from chief executive Kathryn Blackham, who wanted to give staff a better work-life balance.

Canceling work on Wednesdays essentially created two work weeks in one, with ‘Hump day’ seen as a ‘mini weekend’.

And staff have been returning to work on Thursdays more refreshed, Ms Blackham claims.

Hump Day (noun)

Merriam-Webster によると ” Wednesday regarded as the middle point of the workweek という風に記載されています。

The unconventional work-week has seen the company take home a number of international awards, as well as increasing profit and productivity.

Ms Blackham told the ABC they were three times more profitable than they were last year, revenue has increased and staff were happier.

unconventional (adjective)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” different from what most people consider to be usual or normal という風に記載されています。

例文:

He has a really unconventional dress sense.

an unconventional childhood/lifestyle/marriage

He has an unconventional attitude toward work.

conventional (adjective)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” of the usual, traditional, or accepted type, instead of being new and different という風に記載されています。

例文:

You can cook the meat either in a microwave or in a conventional oven.

Her views are remarkably conventional.

conventional behaviour/attitudes/clothes

a conventional wedding

‘I know a lot of workplaces have kind of those Monday morning ‘feels’, where there’s a bit of a vibe in the office, people are bantering back and forward. And in the end you get that kind-of ‘Hump Day’, which is a little bit harder to do.

‘By the time we get to Thursday it’s like a Monday again. You get a new feeling of enthusiasm and cracking on with work, collaboration.’

Many people believe working fewer would make them lazy, however, Ms Blackham said that was far from true.

To banter (verb)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” to speak playfully or teasingly という風に記載されています。

例文:

I think you misunderstood me, I was just bantering.

He stood around bantering with his colleagues.

crack on (phrasal verb)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” to continue doing something as quickly as possible という風に記載されています。

例文:

We really need to crack on with this painting.

The meeting needs to finish by 5, so we‘d better crack on.

Now we’ve prepared the walls we can crack on with the painting.

‘All of the factors that you would have thought would have gone down because we’re working 20 per cent less — in theory, we’re working one day less, although we are doing longer days on the other days — actually we’ve seen them increase dramatically,’ she said.

She said that while they had received some backlash from within the industry, they had seen a lot of praise.

The idea has generated a lot of interest from the United Kingdom, with Ms Blackham invited to speak to MPs and leaders of UK Labour about how it could work there.

Last year, she has also spoke with executives from English supermarket Morrisons about a four-day work week.

最後に、内容が理解でき、新しい単語も知ることができたら、必ずCambridge Dictionaryか、Macmillan Dictionaryで例文を読むようにしてください。そして一番シンプルで、自分が日常使いしときやすそうなもをノートやスマホに書き溜めておいてください。そしてこれを移動中の時などに声に出して覚えることが本当に大事です!(電車では難しいので、僕はよく歩きますw)
