Amazon starts delivering groceries to Prime members for free and within an HOUR after axing $14.99 Amazon Fresh charge

・Both Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Markets will be part of the Prime package

・Customers can choose from thousands of items including meats and snacks

・The delivery services are available in more than 2,000 US towns and cities

To axe (verb)

Cambridge Dictionary によると ” to reduce services, jobs, payments, etc. a lot or completely without warning or in a single action: という風に記載されています。

例文:

Because of the recession the company is to axe 350 jobs.

Almost 1,000 jobs were axed.

US Amazon Prime members can now benefit from free grocery deliveries within 1–2 hours as the online retail firm makes Amazon Fresh a standard benefit of the subscription.

The Amazon Fresh service, that previously cost an extra 14.99 a month, allows users to order from thousands of products including meats, produce and snacks.

Delivery times vary based on the customer’s location, with one and two-hour deliveries available in more than 2,000 cities and towns across the US.

Food orders will have to be at least $35, or $50 in New York, before they qualify for free delivery.

Amazon Fresh is available outside of the US — in parts of the UK, Germany and India, for example — but Amazon has not yet said if the benefit will be launched globally.

To qualify (verb)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” to have the right qualities or be in the right situation to be considered as something or to receive or do something という風に記載されています。

例文:

90% of the boat people did not qualify as refugees.

To qualify for Olympic status, a sport must be played in 50 countries and on three continents.

‘Prime members love the convenience of free grocery delivery on Amazon, which is why we’ve made Amazon Fresh a free benefit of Prime, saving customers $14.99 per month,’ said Stephenie Landry, Amazon’s VP of Grocery Delivery.

‘Grocery delivery is one of the fastest growing businesses at Amazon, and we think this will be one of the most-loved Prime benefits.’

Amazon Fresh will be joined in Prime by the Whole Food Markets service, allowing customers to shop their local Whole Foods store via the Amazon website or app.

‘Customers are hungry for options that help them solve for both weekly meal planning and the moments when they need groceries in a pinch,’ an Amazon spokesperson said in a press release.

Amazon Prime subscribers who live in one of the more than 2,000 — and growing — delivery locations can request an invitation to be alerted to when they can start their regular grocery shops with Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Markets.

The transition of the delivery services into the standard Prime package will not see prices increase or worker wages decrease to compensate for the loss in Fresh subscription revenues, an Amazon spokesperson reportedly told NBC News.

Instead, its expected that the firm will simply absorb any initial losses, much as it did when it rolled out free one-day package deliveries for Prime members in the September of this year — a move that saw a $1.5 billion dollar drop in its stock price.

The move may challenge Amazon’s competitors — with Instacart, Shipt and Walmart, for example, charging the equivalent of around $13 per month for a service that Prime members now get free with their existing Amazon subscription.

According to the Food Marketing Institute and Nielsen, the online grocery market will be worth around $100 billion (£78 billion) by the year 2022.

‘The whole market is at an inflection point and there is some evidence of hockey stick growth in adoption of online grocery [this year],’ eMarketer analyst Andrew Lipsman told NBC News.
