The students and staff at an elementary school have all begun learning sign language in order to welcome a deaf kindergarten student.

The Dayton Consolidated School in Maine invited a Cinderella character actor to sing as she signed in American Sign Language to honor new student Morey Belanger, age six.

Morey is the first deaf student to ever attend the school, and teachers have responded by teaching the rest of the student body sign language.

‘Morey — without even knowing it — has taught us so much,’ said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro told CNN. ‘She has brought a culture to our building that we didn’t have before.’

Teachers have posted placards around the school showing the signs for different objects, and say that most of the students have learned at least 15 or 20 words so far.

Morey herself has helped teach her own kindergarten class.

‘Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet,’ Sampietro said. ‘The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her.’

The school has also installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom.

Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education.

look up to (phrasal verb)

Macmillan Dictionary によると ” to admire and respect someone という風に記載されていますね。

He‘d always looked up to his uncle.

To implement (verb)

To incorporate (verb)

Suggestions from the survey have been incorporated into/in the final design.

This aircraft incorporates several new safety features.

At Wednesday’s princess party, Morey was thrilled when Cinderella began using sign language as she sang.

The Disney princess was played by a local high school student who hopes to some day work as an American Sign Language Interpreter in a school.

Morey, who was dressed as Belle from Beauty And The Beast, ran up to the front and helped sign along to the song.

‘I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed,’ Morey’s mom Shannon Belanger told CNN.

‘I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it’s fun.’
